Let There Be Light Seminar @Shangri-La
Here’s a question; if you need to pick a seminar to rob, which would it be?
Answer; obviously Let There Be Light Seminar! There were literally hundreds of expensive gear and glasses.
The hall was filled with ever enthusiastic photographers, young and old, hobbyists and pros. Heck, I suspect the entire country’s photogphers (and a few foreign representatives) congregated here. Lotsa Nikonians of course.
The seminar was put together by our famous Louis Pang and with him kicking off the session with a surprise wedding play. It was fun and refreshing I must say. Hard to see though if you are sitting on the side of back as many stood up to get a clear shot.
The star of the day was none other than the legendary Joe McNally. It would be hard pressed not to have heard of him if you were into photography. He treated small lights like Lego, setting up complex scene lighting effortlessly quick. With him were his arsenal of lighting gear including speedlights. Although he used CLS technology to trigger the lights, the same concept applies to other method.
But his friendly and funny side made him stood out from many other photographers of his calibre. He just cracked everyone up. We love you man!
Throughout the day, Joe demonstrated the difference between various type of light modifiers and quality of lights. Assisting him was his personal assistant, Drew, local folks especially Johan and some pretty models. The results were projected instantaneously. Nothing to hide and corrections to improve the image were shown and explained.
Louis even organised a charity auction (yes, we photographers are generous folks too) on 4 prints donated by Joe. The prints were Joe’s personal favourites. And to draw maximum damage from the crowd were eye candy auctioneer, Stephanie Chai. This seminar is proving to be top notch!
All in all, it was an eventful experience with lotsa tips and new found understanding of lights. And many stayed back for autograph session with Joe. He gladly obliged even though I sense he was completely exhausted. What a man.
All images above are SOOC, shot in Aperture Priority using custom Vivid picture setting.
Thank you Louis, Joe and…. Steph !
